Grandma Gen:
Learn More About It

  • Chippewa and Ojibwa are not two separate Indian nations; they are the same tribe, and actually the same word! The only difference in pronunciation is due to a slight accent among the different speakers, and the connection is more obvious when one adds an "O" to the beginning of Chippewa. Ojibwa is used in Canada, while Chippewa is used in the United States in all official treaties.
  • The Chippewa know Lake Superior as Gitchigumi, which in English translates to "Big Lake". Lake Michigan, however, is Michigami, which is translated to "Big Lake" as well! What's the difference? While both gumi and gami both mean "Lake", Gitchi refers to big is quality, and Michi refers to big in size.
  • The Red Cliff tribe's reservation is located on the southern shores of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin, near Ashland. The Red Cliff are noted for their very close proximity to the Ojibwa's spiritual center, Madeline Island, which is one of the 21 Apostle Islands.
  • Before settlers moved into the Great Lakes region, there is thought to have been 60,000 to 117,000 Native Americans already living here.
  • Visit the Red Cliff Band's Website (external link).
