Quagga Mussels:
What You Can Do

  • Outdoor enthusiasts, from hunters and fishers to boaters and swimmers can play an important role in controlling some invasive species. Every time we move our boats, four-wheelers and even our feet from one water body to another, we should wash them off thoroughly. Invasive species, from zebra mussels to Eurasian watermilfoil, spread through the seeds, roots, critters and plant matter that stick to our boats, tires, shoes and gear. A little extra time on the dock can save a lot of habitat from this growing problem.
  • Tell Congress to fully fund the Asian Carp Barrier. Congress can stop the Asian carp by authorizing and fully funding the last line of defense against this invasive fish - an electric barrier along the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. The longer we wait, the closer the Asian carp get to taking over our Great Lakes.
  • Urge congress to support the Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act. The Act sets forth a comprehensive plan to prevent unwanted, new species from invading the lakes; modernize sewage treatment; clean-up polluted harbors; and restore wetlands. Each of these steps is essential if we are to restore the lakes and safeguard our Great Lakes way of life. Every day we wait, the problems get worse and the solutions get more costly. We must act now to restore the health of the Great Lakes.
  • Visit to the Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives Web site to find out how you can support the Asian Carp Barrier and the Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act.
