Safe Catch:
Producer's Diary

Reflections from Frederica Freyberg

One interesting sidelight from shooting this story was trying in vain to find the fish advisory posters that the DNR puts up at all the public fishing spots along the Sheboygan River.

Our story was focusing on the PCB pollution in the river (which empties into Lake Michigan) and how the resident species of fish in it are not considered safe to eat. We were looking to shoot a picture of one of the posted advisories. We went to at least five locations we were told they could be found. None was to be found.

We asked the DNR about it and they said sometimes people pull them down, but nonetheless seemed surprised none was posted. Shortly thereafter, the DNR replaced the posted advisories and told us they made them more permanent.
